Lt. Gov. Hochul to speak at “Women in Science” workshop
Paul Smiths, NY (02/10/2017) — New York State Lt. Gov. Kathy Hochul will give a talk Tuesday, Feb. 14, at Paul Smith’s College during a one-day workshop titled “Women in Science.”
Held in partnership with the Adirondack Research Consortium (ARC) and the Center for Women and Civil Society at the University at Albany, the workshop will focus on challenges and opportunities for women in the science field.
Hochul will speak during the luncheon, as well as Adirondack Health President and CEO Sylvia Getman.
The program, the second of three in the Women in Leadership Series Forum, will begin with introductions by Paul Smith’s College President Cathy Dove and ARC President Daniel Spada. A research presentation by Nicole Conant, Department of Educational Policy and Leadership at SUNY Albany, will follow.
A panel discussion featuring several women with professional backgrounds in science and leadership is also on the docket. The panel features Dr. Celia Evans, professor of natural science at Paul Smith’s College; Dr. Michale Glennon, science director for the Wildlife Conservation Society’s Adirondack Program; Adirondack Health Chief Operating Officer Patti Hammond; and Dr. Kathleen Kavanagh, mathematics professor at Clarkson University.
A facilitated discussion – “Outcomes: Identifying Potential Actions and Research Needs to be More Impactful in the Public Schools to Encourage Young Women Interested in Science” – will focus on encouraging young women to consider careers in the sciences. The discussion will conclude the event.
