Paul Smith's College Students Train Saranac Lake High School Students to Stop the Bleed

Paul Smith's College Disaster Management and Response program

Paul Smiths, NY (05/08/2024) — Students in the Paul Smith's College Disaster Management and Response program took over tenth grade health classes in April 2024 at Saranac Lake High School to teach the Stop the Bleed course developed by the American College of Surgeons. Armed with fake "wounded limbs," the college students supervised the high schoolers in the four steps to save a life: protect yourself, alert 911, find the bleed, and compress. Students received national Stop the Bleed certification, certified by Paul Smith's College assistant professor Chris Sheach.

"Teaching Stop the Bleed gave me an opportunity to practice my skills while demonstrating an important life skill to others. Through educating youth on Stop the Bleed we foster a generation more confident in their abilities and capable of saving the lives of those around them."- Ava Ingersoll, sophomore, Paul Smith's College Disaster Management & Response program.

Eric Bennett, a health teacher at SLHS, agrees. "The students were really engaged, and it was great to see hands-on peer learning. This collaboration with Paul Smith's College offers our students practical experience that they can use at home, with friends, or at a summer job." The interaction benefits the PSC students, as well. Sheach adds, "Getting the college students to apply their learning makes it more real for them and builds their confidence to be leaders in the North Country and beyond."

Disaster Management and Response-a popular degree program at Paul Smith's College-trains students in hands-on technical skills, such as emergency medicine, firefighting, and technical rescue, as well as leadership, management and the foundations of State and Federal emergency management policy and processes.
